Hi guys, joining me today is the author of a new contemporary YA book, My Life As I Knew It. I’d like to introduce- Peri June!
Hi Kay! Thanks for having me.
Hi Peri! Tell us a bit about yourself.
Like the vampires I love so much, I am nocturnal; my concentration is so much better at night. I also have a very selfish sweet tooth. If you put something made of chocolate in front of me, I will eat it, even if you tell me not to. Lol.
Have you always wanted to write books? What made you start?
I’ve always dreamed of maybe one day writing a novel, but I was always scared to take that step. My late grandfather was the one who always encouraged me to finally sit down and write, which is why I dedicated my first book to him.
What was it like to publish your first novel?
It was exhilarating and overwhelming at the same time. I couldn’t believe I’d done it.
What are your favourite genres to read and write?
I will read anything as long as it’s not non-fiction. As for writing, I like Young Adult and college aged books where I put the characters through the wringer and have them be better for it. Of course there has be an element of romance in them as well.
Is there much of yourself in any of your characters?
There is a little bit of me in each character; something that I was completely unaware of until the editing process.
If you could meet any fictional character, who would it be and what would you ask them?
Hmm…tough question. Can I meet them all? Lol. I guess Catherine from Wuthering Heights to ask her what the hell was she thinking!
Are you working on any new novels?
I just started writing a new book set in college. Still have no idea where the characters will take me.
Tell us about your latest release!
My first book is called My Life As I Knew It. It’s a YA contemporary. It’s about a girl who sees her mother being murdered by someone close to her. She goes through so much to be able to make peace with it. Many things happen that I won’t spoil here, but there’s a very cute, funny guy that brings some lightness to it.
Even the people closest to you can be monsters.
Maggie Martin is plagued by nightmares.
This hasn’t always been the case. She used to be your typical 17-year-old, worrying about boyfriends and college applications.
Until, one night, when she wakes up to the sound of screaming and witnesses the unthinkable. Now she’s scrambling to put the pieces of her life back together, which is not as easy as everyone would like her to believe.
Especially when she’s struggling just to BREATHE.
With the help of new friends, and a new love, will she be able to put her life back to rights? Or will the past come knocking once more?
What will grip us the most in this book?
Different people connected with different things. Some liked the romantic, funny aspect of it. Some liked the journey toward justice and making peace with the things you cannot control.
What has surprised you the most since publishing?
I was a bit naive going into this whole journey. It’s tough dividing your time between writing and marketing the previous work. If not for the help of others I would have drowned in all the things that needed to be done.
